Livestock Development

Sustainable livestock for prosperous communities.

Strengthening livestock-based livelihoods through improved productivity, animal health, market access and sustainable enterprises.

Livestock Development

Building stronger livestock-based livelihoods.

Livestock is an important source of food, income and household security for many communities across Kenya. However, farmers continue to face challenges including animal diseases, inadequate feed, low productivity and limited access to markets.

POAK's Livestock Development programme supports farmers with practical livestock management, animal health, nutrition and enterprise development approaches that can strengthen household incomes and improve resilience.

Programme goal

To strengthen livestock production systems and create sustainable livestock enterprises that improve household income, food security and community resilience.

Why this programme matters

Helping farmers turn livestock into sustainable livelihoods.

Livestock provides food, income and financial security for many rural and peri-urban households. Yet farmers often struggle with animal health, feed availability, breeding, productivity and market access.

POAK works to address these challenges by strengthening farmer knowledge, improving access to appropriate livestock resources and connecting producers to opportunities across the value chain.

Improved Productivity Supporting farmers to improve livestock management, breeding and production practices.
Animal Health Promoting preventive animal health practices, vaccination and access to veterinary support.
Household Income Strengthening livestock enterprises that can contribute to more reliable household incomes.
Market Access Helping farmers connect with markets, buyers and value-addition opportunities.
Partnership opportunities

Investing in sustainable livestock enterprises.

POAK welcomes partnerships that bring technical expertise, resources, financing, markets and practical solutions closer to livestock-keeping communities.

Programme highlights

Starting with communities where livestock can make a difference.

POAK has identified pilot communities for the initial implementation of the programme. These locations will provide an opportunity to strengthen livestock production systems while developing approaches that can be adapted and replicated elsewhere.

  • Isiolo County
  • Congo Community – Ruiru

Community-based approach

The programme will work closely with local farmers, community structures and extension officers to improve livestock production, strengthen animal health practices and create better market opportunities.

Long-term impact

Productive livestock. Stronger households. Prosperous communities.

The programme aims to strengthen livestock-based livelihoods through improved productivity, animal health, nutrition, market access and sustainable enterprise development. Over time, these interventions can contribute to increased household incomes, improved food security and greater community resilience.
